For Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the last of the universal scholars, the matter was clear: one stands for God, the creator, and zero for the devil, the destroyer. This laid the foundation for the binary system that gave us the computer almost three hundred years later. In an expansive multimedia performance, video artist Gudrun Barenbrock, together with composers Udo Moll and Wolfgang Mitterer, traces the path of the punch card as a data carrier and symbol – from Jacquard’s loom to Babbage’s Analytical Engine to the 80-character code of the IBM 360.

Also appearing in important roles: the eccentric Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace and the first female programmer in world history, the long misjudged computer pioneer Konrad Zuse as well as horse racing, volcanic eruptions, Frankenstein and the calculus of plans. With its combination of acoustic instruments and live electronic sound processing, the music creates the associative spaces for Gudrun Barenbrock’s suggestive visual worlds. Last but not least, one of the last still functioning punch card punches (IBM 029) will be heard live in concert: poetical science in the spirit of Ada Lovelace.

Punchcardmusic was commissioned by ACHT BRÜCKEN | Musik für Köln and is supported by the Ernst-von-Siemens-Musikstiftung.
