Das Projekt verbindet die Partnerstädte Köln und Tunis durch ein künstlerisches Austauschprogramm. Es ist nach dem römischen Gelehrten Plinius dem Älteren benannt, der im 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. das römische Straßennetz für seine Entdeckungsreisen nutzte. Er besuchte Köln und schrieb über die Stadt in seinem berühmten Werk „Naturalis Historia“. Er reiste auch nach Nordafrika, unter anderem nach Tunis, und schrieb über die Flora und Fauna der Region. Die 37 Bände der „Naturalis Historia“ gelten als die umfassendste Sammlung antiken Wissens in lateinischer Sprache. Sie umfasst nicht nur naturwissenschaftliche Themen, sondern auch Geographie, Medizin und Kunst.

Das Programm ermöglicht es Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus Köln und Tunis, in die jeweils andere Stadt zu reisen und diese zu erkunden, gemeinsam mit Kolleginnen und Kollegen zu diskutieren, neue Projektideen zu entwickeln und künstlerische Projekte zu realisieren. Im Mittelpunkt des Austauschs steht die gemeinsame Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst, Natur und Umwelt.

The project connects the twin cities of Cologne and Tunis through an artist exchange programme. It is named after the Roman author Pliny the Elder, who used the Roman road network for his voyages of discovery in the 1st century AD. He visited Cologne and wrote about the city in his famous work ”Naturalis Historia”. He also travelled to North Africa, including Tunis, and wrote about the flora and fauna of the region. The 37 volumes of ”Naturalis Historia” are considered to be the most comprehensive collection of ancient knowledge in Latin. It covers not only scientific topics, but also geography, medicine and art.

The programme enables artists from Cologne and Tunis to travel to the other city and explore it, discuss with colleagues, develop new project ideas and realise artistic projects. The exchange centres on a joint exploration of art, nature and the environment.
