ROHÖLTANKS / CRUDE OIL TANKS, 1998 – 2002
Shell-DEA Raffinerie Köln-Wesseling (mit/with Klaus Osterwald)
Das Luftbild zeigt das Tankfeld an der Autobahn 555 von Köln nach Bonn. Die drei gestalteten Rohöl-Behälter liegen an exponierter Stelle und fallen schon von weitem ins Auge. Ihre Außenhaut wurde durch eine zeichenhafte Visualisierung des Inhalts gleichsam transparent gemacht. Zum einen ist es das Hexagon des Benzolrings, das sich – zum Netz vervielfältigt – über die gesamte Fläche spannt. Ein zweiter Tank variiert die chemischen Grundformeln für Kohlenwasserstoffverbindungen in freier Bildfindung. Auf einem dritten Behälter »fliegen« farbige Strahlenfächer in Anlehnung an das Firmenlogo über die Oberfläche.
Realisation: Die Entwürfe wurden durch eine Vermessungsfirma per Computer und Laserpunkt maßstabsgetreu übertragen und anschließend von Hand ausgeführt. Tankdurchmesser: je ca. 62 m, Höhe: 11, 18, 22 m
The aerial view shows the tank farm on the A555 motorway from Cologne to Bonn. The three sculpturally designed crude oil tanks are situated in a prominent location and catch the eye even from a distance. Their outer shells have been made, as it were, transparent through a symbolic visualisation of their contents. On the one hand, there is the hexagon of the benzene ring, which – multiplied into a grid – spans the entire surface. A second tank features a free interpretation of the basic chemical formulae for hydrocarbon compounds. On a third tank, coloured fan-shaped rays ‘fly’ across the surface, inspired by the company logo.
Realisation: The designs were transferred to scale by a surveying firm using computers and a laser pointer, and subsequently executed by hand. Tank diameter: approx. 62 m each; height: 11, 18, 22 m

Aus Sicherheitsgründen sind die zentralen Messwarten auf dem Werksgelände fensterlose Betonbunker, die unter allen Umständen funktionsfähig bleiben müssen. Hier werden rund um die Uhr sämtliche Produktionsvorgänge gesteuert. Die Arbeit an den Computerterminals ist ermüdend, trotzdem muss hier jeder immer hellwach sein. Lichtkästen mit Fotografien von Wolkenformationen öffnen als imaginäre Fenster die Betonwände und nehmen so dem Raum die Enge.
Realisation: 21 Aluminiumlichtkästen, C–Prints auf Acrylglas, Oberflächen matt kaschiert, Größen und Formate auf den Raum bezogen.
For safety reasons, the central control rooms on the factory premises are windowless concrete bunkers that must remain operational under all circumstances. This is where all production processes are controlled round the clock. Working at the computer terminals is tiring, yet everyone here must remain wide awake at all times. Light boxes displaying photographs of cloud formations act as imaginary windows, opening up the concrete walls and thus alleviating the sense of confinement in the room.
Realisation: 21 aluminium light boxes, C-prints on acrylic glass, matt-laminated surfaces, sizes and formats tailored to the space.
